The Faculty of Dentistry was established in 1998. Its objectives are:
1/ To graduate dentists who are knowledgeable, highly skilled, competent, and of
the highest ethical standards.
2/ To establish curricula that are comprehensive, modern and relevant. These curricula
will address international requirements as well as local issues.
3/ To establish links with international reputable dental institutes in undergraduate
and postgraduate education and training.
4/ To foster research and postgraduate studies in dentistry.
5/ To actively participate in the dental national health care programs.
The Faculty of Dentistry conducts a course of studies leading to the degree of Bachelor
of Dental Surgery (B.D.S.) to students who satisfy the regulations and successfully
pass the examinations undertaken during five academic years. The Faculty of Dentistry
is located at the Academy Charity Teaching Hospital (ACTH) in Khartoum and among
a heavily populated residential area which guarantees an excellent catchments of
patients for training of students and is within reach of transport facilities from
the centre of Khartoum. The dental clinic is equipped with the needed dental units
(one unit per student) and is within the main outpatient department of ACTH. The
Dean's Office, the lecture theatres and the laboratories are situated in one block
and within 50 meters of the dental outpatient department. The School of Dental Technology
shares the same building. There are two lecture halls with a capacity of 42 students
each, two phantom skills laboratories with 24 phantom heads for preclinical training
in operative dentistry and fixed prosthodontics. There are chrome cobalt /porcelain
and acrylic laboratories each with a capacity for 20 students at a time .Technicians
from Sudan and abroad supervise the work at these laboratories .

2- An original of the Sudanese certificate or its equivalent must be sent.
3- An application form must be filled in. 4- A minimum of successfully passing of seven subjects is a must: the expected grades
of acceptance to the faculty are available upon request by contacting the admission
office, U.M.S.T.
5- Proof of non-carrier state of Hepatitis B is a necessity in view of the close
contact of dental students with the public. Testing is undertaken in Sudan prior
to students enrolling in academic activity. Immunization against Hepatitis B virus
is to be taken during the first semester and is available on price of cost-or alternatively
may be taken by the candidate before being admitted to the Faculty of Dentistry
if satisfactory evidence is presented to the Faculty.

Course Phases

Each academic year is made up of 2 semesters (20 weeks each). In the first four
semesters the students study the basic medical sciences and dental morphology ,
The subjects are mainly taught under the auspices of the medical faculty, The subjects
of microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, general surgery, general medicine preclinical
operative dentistry, preclinical prosthodontics and dental biosciences are taught
through semester 5 & 6. The remaining four semesters are designated for teaching
clinical dentistry, research methodology, biostatistics and dental public health.
The clinical course is taught in the Academy's hospital, where the dental clinics
and dental laboratories are located. Teaching within the faculty is based on conventional
and modern teaching methods including seminars, clinical audits, research and problem-
based learning. A modern library exists equipped with a variety of credible references
in each specialty, as well as an integrated audio-visual section as further teaching
aids. Assessment within the Faculty of Dentistry utilizes a system of continuous
assessment examinations including mid-semester, end of semester exams, class tests,
tutorials, and research.
