The University of Medical Sciences & Technology in service of the community
The role of universities includes services to the local community. From the outset,
UMST has incorporated promotion of health in communities in Khartoum and in the
rural areas into its key activities:
1. Establishment of a Charity Hospital (see Academy Charity Hospital).
2. Establishment of health centers in Khartoum (El Mourada, Omdurman, Berber Hamid
Homed Health Center, Wad El Habashi).
3. Promoting eye care through contributing to the national programmes of control
of river blindness (onchocerciasis) and trachoma – both national programmes (through
an agreement with the Federal Ministry of Health and Carter Center) are hosted in
the University's main buildings.
4. Sponsoring clinics in established hospitals in the South (CBM eye department
in Juba Teaching Hospital) or sponsoring hospitals in the South e.g. Raja Hospital.
An Example: Raja Hospital
Raja is a town in the Bahr EL Ghazal State, Southern Sudan. The population has suffered
from many diseases particularly onchocerciasis. The University has raised funds
from NGOs, e.g. The Trust for Supporting Patients (Kuwait based NGO) and Sudan Bank
and also from University funds. The University Hospital in Raja has now been renovated
and 2 general doctors from the University have been appointed to work there and
serve the population. Drugs, essential equipment and surgical supplies have been
provided by the University. An urgent need has been met and more importantly a line
of communication has been established to answer the urgent health needs of the population.
The University, through help from CBM and the Moslem Zakat Chamber, is also arranging
regular eye camps to treat the main causes of blindness in Raja. Students are encouraged
to spend their elective in Southern Sudan to help the health system and take an
active part in the health education and training of paramedical and health volunteers.
