Sudan is a large country with approximately 500 hospitals belonging to the Ministry of Health, the military corps, police & the private sector. One of the biggest problems in Sudan is the lack of qualified anesthetists. After continuous debate between the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Health and the WHO it was agreed to open colleges offering Bachelor degrees in Anesthetic Sciences. Accordingly, in 2004, UMST opened the faculty of Anesthetic Science with the objective of reducing the shortage of anesthetic personnel, especially in rural areas where the anesthetic mortality is high. The course was designed to be executed in 8 semesters to cover 40 important anesthetic & related subjects & was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education after a workshop in Jazira University attended by highly qualified anesthetic staff. The 1st batch was accepted in 2004 and is composed of 21 students who passed the Sudanese school certificate examination with a score of more than 83% plus 18 mature students from the Ministry of Health. The 2nd batch was accepted in 2005 with 20 students from the Sudanese School Certificate plus 13 mature students. A highly qualified staff have been selected for both theoretical & practical teaching to implement the course approved by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Minimum percentage to be admitted to the Faculty of Anesthesia by Sudan School Certificate (or equivalent after evaluation) is 80%.
